Bream Head Conservation Trust

If you are heading north over the Brynderwyn Hills to compete in the Wild Kiwi Event this is the skyline that will greet you – Bream Head (Te Whara), Mt Lion, (Maturiki) Mt Manaia and Mt Aubrey – the stunning entrance to the Whangarei Harbour.  It is a natural sanctuary, surrounded by sparkling coastline, featuring unique archaeological and historical landscapes.  This is the Bream Head Scenic Reserve.

The Bream Head/Te Whara Conservation Trust was established in 2002 by a group of locals with the intention of restoring the reserve to its former glory with healthy forest and abundant bird song – total species restoration, where visitors can experience nature at its best.

With thousands of volunteer hours, hundreds of traps, planting and weeding days, ongoing research, awareness and implementation of conservation innovations, and dedicated rangers our aims are being achieved.  We are a mainland site without a predator fence which makes our achievements of extremely low pest numbers in the reserve a real success story.

  • As you pass through the reserve think about …

  • 800ha of intensive predator control and species monitoring

  • 100 or more kiwi living here

  • Rare plants

  • 9 species of lizards, some found no-where else on the planet

  • 40,000 restoration plants planted since 2002

  • 60km of trapping tracks

  • 1200 bait stations

  • 110 mustelid traps

  • 42 feral cat traps

  • 195 possum traps

  • 150 tracking tunnels

  • 5500 volunteer hours per annum
